Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar mineral. IT was first discovered near the Labrador Peninsula in Canada, where it gets its name from. Labradorite is renowned for its mirage of colors and display of Labradorescence. Its flash of colors can contain blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and even purple. The indigenous people from that area believed that the colors were the Aurora Borealis trapped in the stone. Unlike most stones, the color displayed from Labradorite does not come from light reflected from the surface of this mineral. Instead, the spectrum of colors that you are seeing is caused by light reflecting off of a twinning surface within the stone. The difference in colors depends on the type of twinning surface that the light is refracting off of.
