Kyanite is an aluminum-rich crystal that forms on metamorphic rock under extremely high pressure. Unlike its more traditionally blue, orange, or green-hued counterparts, black kyanite also contains inclusions of graphite that have altered the color. These inclusions also affect the crystal formation, which tends toward fan-like blades.
